The Colonial Zone of the Dominican Republic, located in Santo Domingo, is the historical and cultural heart of the country. Founded in 1498 by Bartholomew Columbus, brother of Christopher Columbus, it was the first permanent European city in the Americas. During the colonial era, Santo Domingo was the administrative and religious center of the region, and from there the expeditions of exploration and conquest to the continent were organized. Spanish colonial architecture is preserved in its cobblestone streets, plazas and historic buildings, such as the Catedral Primada de América and the Alcázar de Colón. The Colonial Zone was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1990, recognizing its cultural and historical importance.
